The city of Madurai specializes in hand dyed contrast border sarees.
It’s called kattuchayam technique, using wooden blocks to tie and lock out colour from one part of the saree, while dyeing the other.
The saree is starched, but becomes very soft after washing.
It is comfortable and long lasting.
The base saree is woven on powerloom, then dyed by hand.
It has zari border and zari stripes on palla.
