Modal is a bio-based fabric that is made from tree cellulose. It has a luxurious silky feel, so it is often called modal silk. Although it is a natural product, the process of manufacture involves soaking the woodpulp cellulose in chemicals to make yarn. Therefore some experts who promote natural eco-friendly products classify modal as semi-synthetic. It is really difficult to make eco-friendly classifications because even supposedly eco-friendly cotton consumes a lot of water (it actually takes less water to produce modal than cotton). And of course, we all know that natural silk requires the killing of silkworms. We acknowledge the complexity of all these issues, and we promote modal as a cruelty free option compared to silk from silkworms.
